Dinner for 40...

...years, that is. My immediate family is larger than the average—nearly 17 of us now!—but we don't quite number 40 around the dinner table... yet.

But as I've already mentioned, we did recently celebrate my parents' 40 years of marriage. Though we didn't get as fancy as we would have liked had we more time and money, it was still a warm & fuzzy kind of evening.

Last Saturday, the McCallen branch of the Compan family piled into our favorite travel vehicle—my Hyundai Santa Fe—and sped up and over to Niles, Ohio, to meet the rest of the Compan family (save for the Doucettes, who were on vacation out West) at Café 422 for dinner.

Café 422 is the fancy restaurant back home. It's where all the high school kids take their Homecoming dates (and in fact, that was the last time I had eaten there, at least 14 years ago), and where the retirees dine on Saturday nights. And it was a perfect venue for our family. We had a nice, secluded table where Noah could be noisy and the rest of us could enjoy some adult conversation.

Poor David... he had the stomach flu and sat in his chair looking a combination of pale and miserable. To his credit, he participated as much as possible between running to the bathroom and running for air (filtered and straight up).

Aside from that one small glitch, the evening went off without a hitch. We showered mom & dad with gifts, including:
  • a large, framed photo of their kids (which we haven't had taken since I was 14, I think)
  • an ice bucket we had hoped to engrave with "40 Wonderful Years" or David's phrase of choice: "Damn, that was a long time!" Turns out the bucket was anti-engraving.
  • a bottle of fancy ice wine from Canada (to fill the bucket) my oldest brother's family brought with them from a recent vacation there
  • a video of my second oldest brother's June wedding
  • and, of course, dinner!

On vacation: Jen, Chris, Andrew, Brendan, Evan (but it was a heck of a vacation...read about it here).

Because you can never say it enough (and heck, it only rolls around once): Happy 40th, Mom & Dad!
